Every unit reviewed in portable power is one I paid retail for. Nothing here is loaned, seeded or sponsored, which is the main reason this section grows slowly.

A review's job is to tell you what changes once the box is open. Here's how I score, what the spec sheet won't tell you, and which review to read.

How I score a product

Five criteria, weighted toward what you notice after the first week rather than what sells the unit:

  1. Does it do the job it's sold for? Measured against the capacity band it competes in, not against units twice its size.
  2. Build and chemistry. LiFePO4 or not, how the case and ports feel after real handling, whether anything has loosened.
  3. Living with it. Fan noise, weight as actually carried, how quickly it self-discharges sitting in a closet, whether the app is useful or an obstacle.
  4. Honest value. Cost per usable watt-hour against the alternatives in its band, not against its own list price.
  5. What breaks the deal. Any single flaw serious enough to override the other four.

Scores land between 4 and 5 for most products here because I don't buy units I expect to be bad — a 4.3 and a 4.8 are meaningfully different, and neither is a recommendation to buy without reading why. The full rubric, including what each score means, is in how I rate products.

What a spec sheet won't tell you

Four things decide whether you like a power station, and none of them appear on the box:

Fan behaviour. Every unit has a fan, and what matters is when it decides to run. Some stay silent until genuinely loaded; others spin up to charge a phone. In a bedroom during an outage, this is the difference between using it and not.

Weight as carried. Listed weight is accurate and misleading. Handle design, balance and whether it needs two hands matter more than the number, especially in the two-kilowatt-hour band.

Standby drain. A unit that quietly empties itself over a few months is a bad backup device no matter how large its battery is.

Recharge manners. How fast from empty, whether it can charge and discharge at once, and whether fast charging is a setting you have to remember to turn on.

Which review you want

Why are all the ratings between 4 and 5?
Because I do not buy units I expect to be bad, so the sample is skewed by design. The useful information is in the gap between a 4.3 and a 4.8 and in the weak points listed on every product, not in whether the number clears some threshold.
How often are reviews updated?
When something changes that would alter the advice, such as a newer model superseding the unit or a fault appearing with longer use. The updated date at the top of each review reflects the last substantive revision rather than a cosmetic edit.
