Off-grid economics don't work like grid-tied solar. You're usually not offsetting a utility bill — you're replacing generator fuel, campsite hookup fees, or the cost of running a power line somewhere remote. That changes the arithmetic completely, and it's why generic solar payback calculators give misleading answers for off-grid builds.

Why the number on the box is optimistic

Peak sun hours are not daylight hours. A location with fourteen hours of daylight might deliver only a handful of peak sun hours. Peak sun hours measure usable energy, not brightness, and confusing the two overestimates production several times over.

Panels lose output as they heat up. Rated output is measured at a defined cell temperature, and real panels on a hot afternoon run well above it. This is why bright summer days don't scale the way people expect.

Every stage costs you something. Panel to controller, controller to battery, battery to inverter, inverter to appliance — each conversion loses a little. Compounded, real systems deliver noticeably less than the sum of their nameplate ratings, which is why sizing calculations apply a system efficiency factor rather than assuming a perfect chain.

Winter is the binding constraint. Annual averages hide the fact that your worst month determines whether the system works year-round. A build that balances on average will still leave you short in December.

What these calculators can and can't tell you

They're good at whether a build is roughly worth doing, how the payback period responds to your usage, and how sensitive the answer is to what you're actually replacing.

They can't know your local sun hours precisely, what you'll pay for components when you buy, or how your usage will change once you have the system — which, in practice, it always does upward. Treat the payback figure as a range rather than a date.

They also can't price your labour. Building it yourself is what makes off-grid cheap per watt-hour, and that only holds if your time isn't in the equation.
