Same loads, same conditions, same order of questions. Specifically:
- The same appliances on both. A fridge, a laptop, and something that heats, because heating loads are where inverter ratings stop being theoretical.
- Capacity measured in use, not read off the box. What matters is what came out, after inverter and conversion losses.
- The awkward specs. Recharge time from empty, noise under real load, and weight as actually carried rather than as listed.
- Cost per usable watt-hour, not sticker price, because that's the number that survives contact with a five-year ownership window.
What I won't do is compare products in different classes and declare a winner. A 300 Wh camping unit "losing" to a 2,000 Wh backup station tells you nothing — they're built for different jobs, and I'd rather tell you which job you have.
The debates that are actually live
Three arguments in this category are genuinely unresolved, and worth your attention:
Battery versus gasoline. Still the real decision for anyone buying with outages in mind. Noise, indoor safety and maintenance pull one way; runtime and cost per watt-hour pull the other.
LiFePO4 versus older lithium-ion. Largely settled on the merits — the cycle life difference is not subtle — but still live in the market, because cheaper chemistry is still being sold without being labelled clearly.
One kilowatt-hour versus two. The most common sizing hesitation, and the one where overbuying is genuinely punished, because the weight roughly doubles for capacity most people don't use.
The debate that is not live, whatever the forums say, is brand loyalty. The ecosystems differ in app quality and expansion options, not in whether the electricity works.
